As the shadows grew longer, Wilhelm began to worry that he would not reach Bannenberg before nightfall. He urged on his horse, an aging gray mare, who continued to plod along at the same easy pace, ignoring his commands. The cart, heavy-laden with wicker cages of chickens, squeaked occasionally as it slowly lurched behind the mare. Focused on the path ahead, Wilhelm failed to notice that the chattering of the squirrels had ceased, and the birds had fallen silent. A sudden movement in the shadows caught Wilhelm’s eye and he called out:
“Is someone there?”

Receiving no answer, Wilhelm spurred his horse onward, and for once the mare responded to his command. Suddenly, something dropped from the tree into the cart, rocking it violently, and causing the mare to spring into a mad dash. Wilhelm reached for his dagger, and something jumped on him, growling furiously. Wilhelm swung the dagger wildly, cutting the harness straps in his panic. The mare raced onward as the cart crashed to a stop. In seconds they swarmed the cart as Wilhelm screamed, breaking the silence of the forest.

Johann stared, bleary-eyed, at the mare in the street, not noticing the remains of a harness still trailing behind her.
“I thought I locked you in for the night,” he mumbled, grabbing the reins and taking the mare towards his stable.
